In this class you learned that Medicare's new GLP-1 Bridge pilot program gives eligible members access to certain weight management medications for a flat $50 copay per fill. The program runs through December 31, 2027, and is designed as a first step toward potentially broader, more permanent coverage down the road.

To qualify, your plan type and your health profile at the time you started GLP-1 therapy both matter — and if you already have coverage for a GLP-1 through your Part D plan for another condition, the Bridge doesn't apply to you. When you're ready to fill your prescription, plan ahead for the prior authorization process, bring your Medicare card, and know that once your first fill is approved, refills are automatic.

The GLP-1 Bridge was built to last 18 months. But it's designed to be a first step, not a final answer. CMS is using this program to collect data on how many people use it and what it costs — and that data will shape whether and how Medicare covers these drugs more permanently through Part D down the road.1

For now, if you've been taking a GLP-1 for weight management and wondering whether Medicare could help cover the cost, the answer is: it might. Start by asking your doctor whether you qualify and whether the Bridge makes sense for your situation.
