Lesson 2

How the GLP-1 Bridge Works

1 min lesson
Last Updated: July 6, 2026

Think of the GLP-1 Bridge as a separate lane from your regular Medicare drug coverage. It runs alongside your Part D plan, not through it. That means your existing drug plan doesn't need to approve anything — the Bridge has its own process, its own administrator, and its own pricing.

CMS — the federal agency that runs Medicare — created the Bridge as a short-term demonstration program. It runs from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027. It was designed for people who can't get GLP-1 coverage for weight management through their current Part D plan.1

Three drugs are covered under the Bridge when prescribed specifically for weight management:

  • Foundayo — an oral tablet

  • Wegovy — available as an injection or tablet

  • Zepbound — the KwikPen version only (the single-dose pen and vials are not covered)

If you're prescribed one of these for a different condition — like type 2 diabetes or sleep apnea — the Bridge doesn't apply. Those prescriptions go through your regular Part D plan as they normally would.2
