Lesson 11
A Real-Life Story
2 min read

Knowing whether you're ready to retire can be tricky since so many details come into play. To show how one family reached their retirement decision, we interviewed a couple who happily retired at age 65 without significant assets.

Retirement at 65-70: A Real-Life Story

Sandra and Damon P. were both able to retire at the age of 65, although they were 6 years apart in age. The pair reached their retirement goals easily due to the fact they lived below their means and have remained in the same modest home for almost 50 years.

Damon worked in the insurance industry for 30 years before choosing to retire, and Sandra continued working as a school librarian until age 65. The fact that Sandra continued working for the first six years of Damon's retirement helped the duo leave their retirement funds alone longer. And since Sandra was younger and enjoyed her job, she didn't mind.

Once Sandra turned 65, she decided she was tired of working and ready to enjoy her golden years. She decided to take Social Security benefits early to help increase the couple's monthly income.

The couple has been happily retired for the last decade thanks to approximately $700,000 in savings, Social Security payments, and the fact they have been mortgage-free for the last 30 years. Currently, they are living off of their Social Security benefits and leaving their nest egg to grow.
